Photo Tips #3 - Light - What time of day should I shoot?

Every beginner in portrait photography has, at some point, asked themselves the question: "When do I shoot?!". The answer is that you shoot whenever you find a shady spot...as in shade. Photographs taken in the shade have that quintessential exposure needed to capture a beautiful and evenly lit image almost everytime!

The problem with shooting portraits on a bright sunny day are the harsh shadows produced by the sun. Harsh shadows can be creative, but most clients want their face lit evenly. This can be achieved by shooting them in the shade.

The benefit of shooting when you have even lighting on your subject is the ability to move forward with creating your scene while grabbing the eye of your audience with your creativity instead of having to worry about the nature of light.

Photo Assignment: This one is easy! Try taking photographs with your subject in the shade.

I hope this Tip has helped you figure out how most photographers get a nice flat even light on their subject. If you enjoyed the article, please like it or tweet it.
